Samsung violated key parts of Apple patents: ITC judge
Samsung infringed a key portion of an Apple patent in its smartphones and tablets, an ITC judge said in a preliminary decision.

WASHINGTON: Samsung Electronics infringed a key portion of an Apple patent by including a text-selection feature in its smartphones and tablets, an International Trade Commission judge said in a preliminary decision. 

South Korean-based Samsung did not infringe portions of a second Apple patent that allows a device to detect if a microphone or other device is plugged into its microphone jack, the judge said in a decision that was issued on March 26 but kept confidential until late on Thursday to allow the companies to redact sensitive business information. 

The full commission must now decide if they will uphold it or overturn the judge's decision. A final decision is expected in August. 

If it is upheld, the ITC can order any infringing device to be barred from importation into the United States. Apple has alleged that Samsung's Galaxy, Transform and Nexus devices, among others, were among those made with the infringing technology. 

Apple had filed a complaint in mid-2011, accusing Samsung of infringing its patents in making a wide range of smartphones and tablet. 

ITC Judge Thomas Pender said in a preliminary decision in October that Samsung infringed four Apple patents but did not violate two others listed in the complaint. There had been seven listed initially, but one was dropped during litigation. 

The full commission then said it wanted the agency's judge to take a second look at portions of two patents where he had found that Samsung infringed. That remanded decision, issued in late March, was unsealed on Thursday. 

Samsung is the world's largest smartphone maker, while Apple is in second place, according to Gartner, a technology research firm. 

Apple is waging war on several fronts against Google, whose Android software powers many Samsung devices. The legal battles between Apple and Samsung have taken place in some 10 countries as they vie for market share in the booming mobile industry. 

Google's Android software, which Apple's late founder Steve Jobs denounced as a "stolen product," has become the world's No. 1 smartphone operating system. Apple's battle against Google's Android software has dragged in hardware vendors that use it, including Samsung and HTC. 

Samsung is also a parts supplier to Apple, producing micro processors, flat screens and memory chips for the iPhone, iPad and iPod. Apple has reduced orders from Samsung for chips and screens. 

The case at the International Trade Commission is No. 337-796.

No more black and white: Nokia to sell colour phones only


With the price expected to be below Rs 1200 the new entry level color phone will be manufactured in India to lower costs.

Nokia is all set to bid adieu to the black and white (Monochrome) display based mobile phones from its product category. In place of that Nokia will be launching a cheaper colour display based mobile phone, according to a report of The Hindu Business Line.
Nokia 100, at around Rs 1,200, is the cheapest colour display based mobile phone of the company while Nokia 1280 is the lone black and white phone of the company that is widely available in the market for less than Rs 1,000. Considering that the price of the new device is expected to be lower than Rs 1,200.

As per the report, the new device will also be manufactured in Nokia's Chennai facility for both the domestic as well as international consumption mainly for countries like Africa and China.
The specifications of the device are however not yet confirmed but the device is expected to feature specifications similar to its present cheapest colour mobile phone - the Nokia 100 - with a 128 x 128 pixel color display and support for all basic functionalities along with FM radio reception for multimedia needs.
The new device will be launching soon but the final date of launch is not yet revealed by the company. This move is expected to answer the competition that Nokia is facing form lesser known or imported brands.

Amaze: Honda's game-changer

Whenever one is really looking forward to something, Murphy's law invariably comes into play—"Anything that can go wrong, will go wrong". So, though I was nervously excited when I went to Goa to test drive Honda's first diesel car in India—the Amaze (before the official launch on April 11)—I chose to remind myself that Honda had its task cut out, but could it get everything right? Merely being a good product was not enough since the Amaze is easily two years late in a market flooded with diesel cars, and it has to disrupt the entry sedan market by improving over the top-selling Maruti Suzuki Swift Dzire on all fronts. Given that the Dzire already ticked all the right boxes in terms of fuel efficiency, space and price, things definitely did not look encouraging.
Could Honda, a brand with a premium image and known for its design talent and smooth petrol engines, take the challenge to the diesel car market as well? In justifying a name like the 'Amaze', the Japanese carmaker had admittedly set a high target for itself. But going by what we know of Honda cars, and the no-nonsense Japanese attitude to life, I had a gut feeling that Honda would do everything to live up to the task even if it takes ages to launch. In most ways, I was glad that I got it right.
In terms of design, the Brio feels well proportioned in its three-box 'Amazing' avatar. This is good since, usually in compact sedans, the boot looks more like an afterthought that destroys the original design lines of the base hatchback—I'm thinking Maruti Dzire and Tata Indigo CS, where the Swift and the Indica were far better lookers, respectively. How did Honda do this? With the overall length restricted to less than four metres, what helped was the relatively shorter bonnet of the Brio, as compared to cars like the Swift. That left Honda engineers with more space to play with when they added a boot and a larger rear seat. Straight lines at the back and confident shoulder lines give the Amaze a broader and more upmarket look over the Brio. In fact, the Amaze will also be offered with an automatic option, but only with the petrol variant to start with.
Apart from a new two-slatted grille, the front has a very clear resemblance to the Brio, though the side profile from the B-pillar and the rear-end is distinct in design. To increase both rear seat and boot space, the car has been slightly widened from the back—the boot is the largest in the sub-four-metre sedans, at 400 litres, which dwarfs the Dzire's 316-litre boot. Overall, the fit and finish is what one expects of Honda, with nice detailing in the tail lights and abundant use of chrome on the front and rear adding to the premium appeal. Quality carries on to the inside plastics as well and they do well to remind buyers that they have moved up in life by upgrading to a sedan from the sea of hatchbacks, albeit at a bargain. On convincing customers with a premium appeal, Honda does far better than the Toyota Etios, Mahindra Verito and even the Dzire—most cars in the mass segment lack the fit and finish that Honda maintains through its range starting from the Brio.
When it comes to the heart, there is no need in spending much time over the petrol. The petrol engine is the same 1.2 litre i-VTEC already seen in the Brio and the Jazz, putting out 88 PS of power. It revs smoothly, is reasonably fuel-efficient (18 kmpl for manual, 15.5 kmpl for auto), but feels slightly lethargic when on an incline on the Western Ghats. So, I presume overtaking might be bit of a chore on the highways. But the petrol is not what all the fanfare is about; after all, diesel variants now account for 80% of sales, where available, and Honda is finally there.
The diesel engine, launched under the 'Earth Dreams' umbrella, may well be the real game-changer for Honda in India. To be used in the City, maybe the Jazz and a yet-unnamed utility vehicle that might be launched next year, the Amaze introduces the 1.5 litre i-DTEC powerplant into its Indian portfolio. The new diesel engine promises quite a lot, starting from the most fuel-efficient engine in the country (25.8 kmpl), to the highest power in class at 100 PS, to the highest torque in class as well, at 200 Nm coming in as low as 1,250 rpm. What this means is that it is a breeze to drive in city traffic, with power and acceleration coming in very early. Unlike other turbocharged diesel engines where the car feels slow in the first gear and suddenly gives a rush of power at around 2,000 rpm, the power delivery in the Amaze is linear throughout the rev band. In a drive spanning two hours, the car felt confident and very stable in a straight line, though a bit jerky around corners.
Honda has gone to great lengths to get everything right. Rare for diesel engines, the i-DTEC has an aluminium engine block that helps reduce weight – lower weight increases fuel efficiency. The focus has been on lower friction and weight throughout the engine, while Honda has even developed a new cooling system and a new low-viscosity engine oil (with Idemitsu) specifically for this engine. In fact, India will also be its global diesel engine base for major export markets like Europe where diesel engines are popular. The 1.6 litre i-DTEC used in the European Civic and the CR-V is essentially the same base engine as the 1.5 litre version used here, so components will be exported from India to all such markets.
But like they say, every rose has its thorn. Although it was tough to find faults with the Amaze, what put me off a bit was the plain Jane dashboard borrowed verbatim from the Brio. Now, even an entry-level sedan customer has high aspirations of luxury and carmakers need to meet that with more features. Though the quality levels in terms of touch and feel remain high, the design is very basic and lacks some features such as an automatic air-conditioning system. Plus, there is no CD player option in the company-fitted stereo. Also, while power delivery and efficiency are good and even vibration levels are well under control, the sound from the diesel engine invades cabin privacy to an extent.
In the end, the question remains, will the Amaze be the golden egg for Honda? In my opinion, if Honda does not make the pricing mistake it made with the Jazz initially and is able to produce enough units, there is no reason why the Amaze should not do well. Given the that Jazz is off the Honda menu as of now, I expect Amaze prices to start at around R5 lakh (petrol) and R6 lakh (diesel).

HTC First, the ‘Facebook phone’

Facebook wants to get further entrenched into your mobiles. In what can be termed the company's most ambitious attempt to strengthen presence in the mobile computing space, the company has launched a new app -- Home -- that will replace users' home screen in some Android phones. 
 And the first Android home for Facebook is HTC's brand new phone, HTC First. The phone, which will be the first phone to come preloaded with Facebook Home.
 The all-new HTC First has a 4.3-inch touchscreen with 1280x720p resolution and 341ppi pixel density. The phone is powered by a dual-core 1.4GHz processor and runs on Android 4.1 (Jelly Bean) layered with Facebook Home launcher. Onboard memory in this device is 16GB and RAM is 1GB.
 Communication options in the new Facebook phone include 2G, 3G, 4G, Wi-Fi, NFC, Bluetooth 4.0 and microUSB. This phone runs on 2,000mAh battery that offers talk-time of up to 14.3 hours. The company offers this phone in four colour options black, white, red and pale blue.
 In the US market, HTC First is up for pre-orders with AT&T at $99 on a two-year contract. Without contract, the phone is priced $449 in the US market. In Europe, Orange in France and EE in UK will sell HTC First on contracts. There is no word on the India launch of the device as of now.

An image of a new BlackBerry device that has a hardware (QWERTY) keyboard and runs BlackBerry 10 OS has surfaced online on BlackBerryOS forums. The image of the device was posted by a user on a forum thread along with a claim that Blackberry was working on a curve-like model for BB10, under the R-series.

Just a day back, a sketch of the alleged R-series device also appeared online on BlackBerry Empire. The sketch displayed microSD and Micro-SIM card slots on the left side of the device.
The phone is expected to be a mid-range device, like other phones in the Curve series. It's rumoured to have 8GB of internal storage and an 1800mAh battery. The phone is expected to be priced between $300 and $400, as per the report.

BlackBerry has already launched the first device of the L-series, the Z10 which is a full-touch device running BlackBerry 10 OS. The company is expected to launch the second BlackBerry 10 device, the Q10, that sports a hardware keyboard, part of the N-series.

Last year, there was another rumour that BlackBerry would release six BlackBerry 10 devices.

It would be interesting to see BlackBerry's product strategy with BlackBerry 10, specially at a time when large screen phones or phablets and tablets are gaining popularity among consumers.  Also, the first two devices in the range are premium ones, so the company surely needs a more diverse line-up of products in terms of price points, if it wants to succeed. So we won't be surprised if the rumour turns out to be true.

BlackBerry had announced an unexpected quarterly profit on demand for the Z10, but revenue remained far below year-earlier levels. The smartphone maker had claimed that it had sold about 1 million of the new Z10 devices during the fourth quarter ended March 2. It shipped roughly 6 million smartphones in that period.

Hands-On: The New Facebook Home On Mobile - Video




Facebook announced Home, its new approach to Android today. We had a hands-on (video above) with the new HTC First device that comes preinstalled with Facebook Home, as well as a downloaded version of Facebook Home on a Samsung device.
You can see the various features in the video, including Cover Feed, Chat Heads, and the new navigation, which Facebook calls “physics-based.” Cover Feed is like News Feed but an expanded scrolling version so that each photo or status update takes up the full screen of the phone. Chat Heads are a new way of messaging (through Facebook Messages or SMS) that are accessible even when using other apps.

Samsung challenges Google, teams up with Mozilla for new Android browser


While Google and Samsung continue to dominate the smartphone landscape, thanks to Android and the ultra-popular Galaxy devices, there has been some amount of friction between the two. It could be attributed to Samsung’s brand growing bigger than Android or the fact that Google buying Motorola has put Samsung on alert. 

So what is Samsung doing collaborating with Mozilla on a new browser? Mozilla’s CTO Brendan Eich announced on the open source foundation’s blog that it has teamed up with Samsung on an advanced technology Web browser engine called Servo.

Eich calls Servo an attempt to build a browser for the new Web from ground up. He added that the browser based on Servo will run “on modern hardware.” The post also stated that the new browser will address chief concerns among users. “This means addressing the causes of security vulnerabilities while designing a platform that can fully utilize the performance of tomorrow’s massively parallel hardware to enable new and richer experiences on the Web.

The new browser will be optimised for multi-core computing and Servo will be written in Rust, a safe and fun language developed by Mozilla along with a growing community of enthusiasts and Samsung.

This is an interesting match-up indeed. Mozilla, if you will recall, has been hawking its own open source Firefox OS and Samsung famously denied wanting to launch a Firefox phone just after Mobile World Congress in February. Samsung is also heavily invested in the open source ecosystem thanks to its work with Tizen and of course, Android. Given all this, the question does arise as to what is Samsung’s intention behind the new collaboration. 

The obvious theory, and one which many would float forward, is that this is yet another way for Samsung to hedge its bets against Android. The Korean company’s dependency on Android could become an issue once (or if) Google starts really leveraging its Motorola Mobility acquisition. The alliance with Mozilla could just be Samsung’s way of moving away from Chrome and Google’s default browser on pre-Jelly Bean phones. 

However, there is another possible reason behind Samsung’s move. As we saw during the launch of the latest flagship, the Samsung Galaxy S4, the company is trying to shift focus from only hardware development, which remains its core business, and look at the software side of things as well. Samsung’s big focus with the Galaxy S4 was the TouchWiz features that come with the phone, more than the hardware. As the room at the top gets smaller for hardware bragging rights, it only makes sense for big-name OEMs to differentiate themselves from the rest by offering something unique software-wise. 

For Mozilla, the alliance with Samsung is a way to get a deeper foothold in the mobile market. By aligning with the market leader, it has increased the profile of its own efforts for mobile development as well as for its Firefox OS. Eich pointed to this fact in the post. “This is an exciting step in the evolution of both projects that will allow us to start deeper research with Servo on mobile. We, along with our friends at Samsung will be increasingly looking at opportunities on mobile platforms.
