giant Apple is way behind in innovation and if the company doesn't innovate fast, it may soon have to loose its leading position in the market, feels Thorsten Heins, CEO of Canadian smartphone maker BlackBerry.
Ahead of the launch of BlackBerry Z10 in Australia, CEO Heins told Australian Financial Review, "The user interface on the iPhone, with all due respect for what this invention was all about is now five years old." He also said that the rate of innovation is very high in the smartphone sector and Apple may find its being replaced rivals if it does not keep pace.
Coming to the comparison between the iPhone operating system and the company's own BlackBerry 10 OS, Heins said the latter is better at multitasking, such that users can run several apps on their phones as they would on their laptops.
Heins also said developers have been impressed by the initial response to the BB10 operating system. He said negotiations are currently going on with companies like Instagram and Netflix to create apps for the company's mobile platform. The BB10 ecosystem will have approximately 1,00,000 apps by the time Z10 will launch in the US.
Though criticising Apple for not innovating fast, Heins did acknowledge Apple's role in revolutionising the mobile industry. "Apple did a fantastic job in bringing touch devices to market... They did a fantastic job with the user interface, they are a design icon," said Heins.
