It has been known for long that Google's Motorola unit is making a new smartphone under the project codename X-Phone. This device is widely expected to be unveiled at the upcoming Google I/O in May 2013. However, a recent report claims that X-Phone is not a single phone, but a whole series of devices, much like Samsung's Galaxy line-up.
Technology website AndroidAndMe has reported that the upcoming series of Motorola X-Phones will counter the popular Galaxy range of smartphones and tablets by Samsung and pitchfork Google as biggest Android rival for Samsung.
Above all, Google Motorola will allow users to customise the hardware of their phones, thus giving them the option of selecting internal storage, RAM, colour etc, said the report quoting an insider at Motorola.
The first X-Phone, the report said, will have an eight-core processor, wherein one core will be used only by Motorola's new human language system, though there were no details about this upcoming feature.
Not only are some hardware specifications of the rumoured X-Phone said to be customisable, but users can also pre-load contacts, apps, ringtones, wallpapers etc in the device before it reaches them. It is reported that each unit of the phone will be delivered to buyers within a week of placing the order.
The first X-Phone is reported to hit the shelves in June this year. This has been speculated for some time now, since it is likely to be unveiled in May.
Coming to the operating system, Motorola is said to be guaranteeing one Android update for the phones under the X-Phone range. Moreover, the update schedule will not depend on telecom carriers, as is the case in the US. Buyers will have to book their orders for the phones on an online store, presumably Google Play Store, where users can buy the current flagship Nexus 4. The report said they can also head to telecom carriers' showrooms to place orders, but did not speak about the phone's availability via national and global retail outlets.
About pricing, the report said Motorola and Google will price the device very competitively in order to lure buyers.
